Seaver versus Spahn. Arguably the best left hander in history going up against one of the best rightys. Spahnie against "Tom Terrific". So faced off two hall of famers at Shea in game one of the Braves-Mets series. And what a game it would turn out to be. Scoreless though 3 innings, the Braves would get to Seaver first. Wes Covington would rattle one around in the right filed corner that Art Shamsky couldn't get a handle on and Covington was at third with a triple. Del Crandall would knock a sun scraper to right and Covington would score. The Mets would tie it up in the 5th on a Jerry Grote single to center that Bruton would misplay allowing Grote to go to second. Jerry would score on a Bobby Pfiel single. Eddie Matthews would put Milwaukee back on top when he tripled off the right field wall. Wes Covington would single to right making it 2-1 Milwaukee. Al Weis would help get the run right back for New York, when he doubled, scoring on a Donn Clendennon single. It would stay tied 2-2 until the 11th inning when Hank Aaron hit a Tug McGraw, 3-2 pitch into the left field bleachers. The lead didn't last long as New York promptly tied in their half of the inning. Art Shamsky walked to lead off the inning and would score on a Jerry Grote hit. Tied until the 14th, Bobby Pfiel would single but get thrown out at second when Grote
tried to bunt him over. Rod Gaspar would draw a walk followed by an Al Weis base hit. Art Shamsky would get the game wining RBI with as stroke into right, scoring Grote.
Ron Taylor gets his 2nd win for the Mets. Spahn and Seaver were not involved in the decision, but an excellent game by both and another game in which Milwaukee blew not one, not two but three leads.
Lew Burdette took the mound in game two, while Jerry Koosman was given the ball by Andy. Burdette continued his mainstay ways for the Braves staff as he runs his record to 3-0 and Koosman continues his hard luck going down for his 3rd loss against no wins. Burdette pitched a masterful game giving up only 2 hits and walking one as he pitched a shut out and allowing New York to only leave 3 men on base. Hank Aaron hits his 4th home run to extend his hitting streak to 10. The Braves take game 2 with a 3-0 win in Shea.
Game 3
The rubber match moves to County Stadium. Buhl for Milwaukee faces Gentry for New York. The Mets would open the scoring in the 2nd when Ron Swoboda would single and moving up to second on a fielders choice. A Bobby Pfiel single to right would score Swoboda. IN the bottom of the 3rd, Milwaukee would tie on 3 singles. In the bottom of the 4th, Joe Adcock would give Milwaukee the lead when a mammoth shot to left. But, has been Milwaukee's tendency all year, they would lose the lead as quick as they got giving a run back to the Mets in the top of the 5th. With 2 outs Ken Boswell would double to right center and Jerry Grote would single him home. In Milwaukee's half of the 6th, Hank Aaron would smoke a single, making sure he's safely hit in every game this year and Joe Adcock would hit his 2nd home run, as he gain hit a 383 footer to left center. Milwaukee would finally hold a lead and win it 4-2.
