9/26-9/27 - Dodger Stadium
GAME 1 - Los Angeles 5, Brooklyn 4 Billy Loes was nursing a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the 5th when the offensively challenged LA team erupted for 5 runs LA's starter Don Drysdale not only won the game with his arm, but he hit a 3 run homer in his team's breakout inning. To their credit Brooklyn began to chip away at the 5-1 lead and scored solo runs in 3 consecutive innings to bring it to within 1 run. After Pee Wee Reese singled to lead off the 9th and Junior Gilliam bunted him over to second Jim Brewer was called upon to relieve the tiring Drysdale. Brewer finished the game out in style by fanning both Carl Furillo and Duke Snider to end it. In a losing cause Don Hoak had a 3 for 4 day.
GAME 2 - Brooklyn 2, Los Angeles 1
Southern California was treated to a pitchers duel between two New York metropolitan area hurlers. Los Angeles' Sandy Koufax hails from Brooklyn, NY and Brooklyn's Don Newcombe is the pride of Newark, NJ. Both hurlers were on their "A" games, while both offense struggled except for "the quiet man" Gil Hodges who went 3 for 5 and knocked in both of Brooklyn's runs. Koufax had a 1-0 shutout going into the top of the 9th when Duke
Snider singled to left and the ball went through Lou Johnson's legs. The Duke wound up on second with 1 out and things looked real bleak when Campy lined out to Jim Lefebvre for out number 2. That brought up Hodges who lined a single to right to tie the game. Both Koufax and Newcombe pitched their hearts out, yet neither starter would wind up getting a decision. Clem Labine would come on for Brooklyn in the 10th and would keep LA at bay. Koufax would pitch until the 11th and was relieved by Ron
Perranoski, who gave up a lead off homer to Gil Hodges, which produced Brooklyn's margin for victory. Labine had a bit of trouble in the bottom of the 12th when he walked Wes Parker with 1 out. Parker stole second, but Johnny Roseboro struck out looking and Willie Davis lined out to Snider in center to end it.
9/28 - Ebbets Field
GAME 3 - Brooklyn 10, Los Angeles 4
The series shifted 3,000 miles to Ebbets Field, the ancestral home of the Dodger franchise. For players like Sandy Koufax and Junior Gilliam it was a return to the venue where their respective careers started. For someone like Tommy Davis it was a return to a place where he was born and raised. Both teams started crafty lefties. Neither one was adept at at fooling their opponent or outlasting mother nature. With an hour long rain delay in the middle of the first neither pitcher was able to return from the 68 minute hiatus with much stuff. Brooklyn's Johnny Podres gave up 3 runs in his 4 innings of work, while LA's Claude Osteen was bombed for 6 runs in 4 innings. The key difference in the game was middle relief. LA's middle reliever Howie Reed was just as bad as his predecessor. Brooklyn's middle relief was outstanding. 19 year old Sandy Koufax, who has battled control problems all season pitched 3 innings of 1 hit ball to notch the win before
yielding to Russ Meyer, who gave up 1 meaningless run in the 9th. Brooklyn banged out 10 runs on 16 hits. Veteran infielders Pee Wee Reese (4-5, 3 runs/3RBI) and Jackie Robinson (3-5, 1 Run) lead the way. Reese hit 2 homers as did Roy Campanella, who increased his season total to 4. Duke Snider also hit his 4th in this blowout victory in Flatbush.
