‘84 Tigers sweep ‘85 Royals

Jack_Morris_DET Tuesday  August 26  at Royals Stadium.  Jack Morris retired the first six in a row, only to walk the bases full in the third inning.  He got Lonnie smith to hit into an inning ending double play and the Royals failed to score.  With one out in the fifth, Dave Concepcion booted a Lou Whitaker ground ball.  Whitaker was forced at second, but consecutive singles by Barbaro Garbey, Lance Parrish and Larry Herndon produced two runs.  The Tigers added another run in the sixth when Whitaker singled home Rusty Kuntz who had led off the inning with a walk.  The Royals got their lone run in the 7th when Jim Sundberg was safe on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded as the Tigers failed to get the double play that had saved Morris in the third.  Morris (2-0, 2.53) gave way to Willie Hernandez (1 save, 0.00) who closed out the game.  Charlie Leibrandt (1-2, 3.18) took the loss.  Tigers 3  Royals 1

Wednesday August 27 at Royals Stadium.  Dan Petry came intoLance_Parrish_DET this game having lost one game, having pitched ten innings in two starts, walking 9 and giving up 12 hits.  Just under three hours later, he had nearly doubled his inning output (10-19), allowed only two hits and walked none, and dropped his era from 7.20 to 3.79.  The Tigers gave him all the runs he needed before he ever took the mound.  Larry Herndon's scored Whitaker who led off the game with a walk.  Darrell Evans then drove home Garbey with a sacrifice fly.  Lance Parrish added his second homer of the season and Whitaker drove home two in the ninth to cap things off.  Petry moved his record to 1-1.  Bud Black took the loss (0-2, 3.52)  Tigers 6  Royals 0

Steve_Balboni_KCR Thursday August 28 at Tiger Stadium  Milt Wilcox (0-1, 3.48) looked to close out the sweep.  Opposing him and trying to save one victory of this three game set would be the very imposing Bret Saberhagen (1-1, 1-.06); neither pitcher would be around for the decision.  The Royals jumped on Wilcox for two runs in the first.  With the bases loaded, Steve Balboni singled home two runs.  In the top of the third, the dangers of nicotine became all too apparent to the Tiger manager.  With one out Lonnie Smith singled.  Carsh Davis signaled to Parrish, then ducked up the ramp for a quick smoke.  By the time he finally focused back on the game, George Brett and Jorge Orta had been intentionally passed to load the bases.  Wilcox then became the manager's favorite player by striking out both Steve Balboni and Frank White.  The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the third on consecutive singles by Whitaker, Trammell and Evans.  Pat Sheridan (1) andRuppert_Jones_DET Balboni (2) had solo homers in the fourth and fifth.  Sid Monge  came on for the Tigers in the 6th, and, after giving up a single to pinch hitter Daryl Motley, was gone one batter later when John Wathan took him deep (1), giving the Royals a 6-1 lead.  Evans led off the 6th with his 4th homer of the season.  Later in the inning, Chet Lemon triple to drive home Garbey who had been safe on a Brett error.  Rupert Jones hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 8th to cut the lead to one.  In the bottom of the ninth, Saberhagen walked Whitaker to lead off the inning.  Dan Quisenberry was immediately summoned from the bullpen.  The Quiz has not been on the top of  his game having blown his only save Barbaro_Garbey_DETopportunity.  He got Trammell to ground out, advancing Whitaker to second.  Evans was walked intentionally.  The Quiz got Parrish to strike out.  Jones, however, singled to tie the game and Barbaro Garbey singled to end the game.  Dave Rozema pitched four scoreless innings to get the win (2-0, 4.50).  Quiz took the loss (1-2, 6.35, 2 blown saves)  Tigers 7  Royals 6
