9/6-9/7 - Tiger Stadium
GAME 1 - '07-Red Sox 13, '84-Tigers 4 For the first time all year Jack Morris (3-1, 3.77) got shelled. Morris never made it out of the 2nd inning after giving up 7 runs (5 earned). Curt Schilling (3-1, 3.67) didn't need to bring any condiments to win this one. Schilling gave one of those so called "quality" start performances (6IP/3ER). Boston's 5 run second inning was the death of Morris' day. Dave Rozema also gave the Bosox a five run inning in the 7th, but by that time the game was out of reach and the fans were already walking down Trumbull to their cars. Big Papi', David Ortiz hit his 8th homer of the season on a day where he had 4 RBI's. Dustin Pedroia went 4 for 6 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Manny went 0-6 and was the only Red Sox player to go without a hit. Interestingly all of Detroit's runs came on 4 solo homers (Hojo, Whitaker, Bergman & Gibson).
GAME 2 - Red Sox 5, Tigers 2
Dice-K threw 120 pitches in 5 2/3 innings and left the game in the hands of Mike Timlin and Jonathan Papelbon. The Bosox pen did their job and the the offense supplied 5 runs, which was more than enough. Detroit broke the ice with a solo run in the first off of Dice-K. Boston answered back with 2 in the 2nd when captain Jason Varitek hit a 2 run homer. A two run single by Mike Lowell in the 5th made it 4-1 Boston. Lowell had 5 singles on the day with 2 RBI to pace the Boston offense. Darrell Evans hit a solo shot to lead off the 7th to cut the lead in half, but a Kevin Youkillis solo shot in the 9th bumped the lead back up to 3. Papelbon notched his 7th save on the season.
9/8- Fenway Park
GAME 3 - Red Sox 1, Tigers 0 A modern day pitcher's duel usually lasts around 7 innings and 100 pitches. That pretty much describes what went on today as Josh Beckett went 6 2/3 innings and allowed zero runs. Milt Wilcox went 7 innings, but he gave up that one magical run that would actually hold up. With 2 outs Mike Lowell doubled and JD Drew followed that with an opposite field moon shot that hit the Green Monstah and wound up being a double. A most impressive 2 1/3 inning relief performance by Kyle Snyder earned him his 3rd win of the season.
GAME 4 - Tigers 4, Red Sox 0
Detroit, which had the best record in baseball going into the series, managed to salvage the finale as Juan Berenguer (4-0, 0.96) continued his amazing pitching with 7 shutout innings. Auriello Lopez threw two perfect innings in relief to complete the shutout. Detroit managed only 3 hits in the victory, with all 3 coming in their 4 run 2nd inning. After Lance Parrish flew out to center Tim Wakefield's knuckleball stopped knuckling and the next two batters easily walked. Larry Herndon singled to load the bases up and Chet Lemon singled home Darrell Evans to make it 1-0. A sac fly by Hojo made it 2-0 and a two run double by Lou Whitaker would make it 4-0, which is how it would end.
