‘71 Bucs take 2 of 3 from ‘57 Braves as Aaron’s 22 game hitting streak comes to an end

9/10-9/11 - Three Rivers Stadium
GAME 1 - Braves 10, Pirates 7

Gene_Conley_MLN Bob Buhl and Nelson Briles were equally bad over their 6 innings of pitching batting practice.  That meant that the score was tied at 6 after 6.  Milwaukee's pen outperformed Pittsbugh's, so the Beer town team was able to notch the win.  Gene Conley (2-0 2.88) gave up only 1 run in 3 innings of relief.  Bob Miller let the Bucs down by giving up 3 (2 Earned) in less than 2 innings.  Joe Adcock and Wes Covington hit their 5th homers of the season. Eddie Mathews went 3 for4 with 2 RBI's, but the real story is that Hank Aaron, who went 1 for 5 singled with 1 out in the top of the 9th to keep his 21 game hitting streak going.

GAME 2 - Pirates 6, Braves 4
Warren Spahn (1-5, 3.65) continued to suffer through a miserableBob_Robertson_PIT season.  Milwaukee scored a solo run in the 9th to stake the crafty southpaw to a 4-3 lead.  Eddie Mathews scored easily on a ground out by Joe Adcock.  Spahnie needed to notch 3 outs in the bottom of the 9th for the win.  Unfortunately Spahn would have to get the meat of the Pirate order out to get that win.  Rennie Stennett led off with a bloop single to right.  With one out Roberto Clemente walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Al Oliver then lined a single to right that Aaron fielded cleanly.  Stennett gambled and headed for home but was nailed by about 5 feet by Aaron's peg for the second out of the inning.  Up stepped Bob Robertson, who murders left handed pitching.  Robertson took a called strike on the corner then teed off with an upper deck 3 run walk off homer.  About the only good news on the day was that Aaron extended his hit streak to 22 games.

GAME 3 - Pirates 9, Braves 0
Steve_Blass_PIT The final game of the series turned out to be a total disaster for teh 8-16 Braves.  To start things off the Bucs scored 4 runs over the first 2 innings en route to a 9-0 shellacking of Lew Burdette, who was bench bound after 5.  Steve Blass (4-1, 3.06) fanned five, walked none and authored a tidy 6 hit complete game shutout.  Al Oliver went 5 for 5.  Yesterday's hero, Bob Robertson went 4 for 5.  the Pirates banged out 19 hits in all, but the big story was Hank Aaron went 0 for 4 as his 22 game hitting streak came to an abrupt end.
