‘93 Jays take 2 of 3 from ‘78 Bombers

9/10-9/11 - Yankee Stadium
GAME 1 - Blue Jays 6, Yankees 4
Pat_Borders_TOR Jim Beattie and the Bombers were clinging to a 3-2 lead when the Jays posted a 3 spot in the 5th.  Three consecutive singles to start the inning made it a foregone conclusion that the Jays would at least tie the game.  John Olerud, who hit single #3 knocked in Devon White.  Robbie Alomar stole 3rd to put runners on the corners, but that didn't really matter as Pat "International" Borders doubled home both runners to put the Jays up by 2.  On the following play Yankee backstop Thurman Munson committed the rare catcher's interference, but the slumping Joe Carter struck out and Tony Fernandez grounded out weakly to prevent further damage.  Borders would walk with the bases loaded the following inning to give the Jays a 3 run lead.  Bucky Dent would single home Roy White to cut the lead to 2, but the Bombers could not get any more runs off the Jays pen as Mike Timlin got a 4 out save to close it down.  Todd Stottlemyre (2-3, 4.45) got the win.  Ken Clay, in relief of Beattie (0-2, 9.72) pitched 4 1/3 innings of super relief allowing just the solo run in the 6th.

GAME 2 - Yankees 11, Blue Jays 8
With respective aces, Pat Hentgen (1-2, 6.12) facing Ron GuidryReggie_Jackson_NYY (2-4, 4.76) the Bronx crowd came expecting a well pitched game.  Instead they were treated to a fireworks show that would have made the Garucci Brother proud.  Hentgen was gone after 3 1/3 innings after allowing 7 earned runs on 9 hits.  Guidry labored until the 7th allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits.  After Toronto scored 3 in the 7th it was time for the Goose to get loose.  Rich "Goose" Gossage came on and pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th innings to save his 4th game for the Bombers.  Reggie Jackson, who has struggled all season (hitting .219) went 2 for 3 and hit his 4th homer of the season.  The Bombers' attack was well balanced with only 1 regular, Fred "Chicken" Stanley, not getting a hit.

9/12- Skydome
GAME 3 - Blue Jays 10, Yankees 0
Juan_Guzman_TOR Juan Guzman
scattered 7 hits to fashion a complete game shutout of the Yanks.  Reggie continued his hot streak of late going 3 for 4 and showing the only life the Bombers had offensively.  Once again "Figgy", Ed Figueroa, turned in a less than stellar performance (8IP / 10R / 16 H).  Guzman threw 150 pitches in his complete game effort.  Backup catcher Randy Knorr once again impressed with his bat by going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI and hitting his 3rd round tripper of the season.
