9/10-9/11 - Dodger Stadium
GAME 1 - Dodgers 1, Giants 0 Don Drysdale went all 11 innings and tossed a 2 hit shutout. "Big D" was forced to wait around for the absentee Dodger offense to arrive and post a run Hoyt Wilhelm (2-1, 1.86) took the loss in relief of Johnny Antonelli who was stellar himself, going 9 2/3 innings and allowing no runs. Ron Fairly led off the bottom of the 11th with a double and Jim Lefebvre bunted him over to third. A walk to Wes Parker left it up to light hitting catcher Jeff Torborg. Al Worthington replaced Wilhelm and uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Fairly to walk home with the winning score.
GAME 2 - Giants 2, Dodgers 1
Rueben Gomez and Sandy Koufax locked up in a pitcher's duel. Gomez left after the 6th and Hoyt Wilhelm (3-1, 1.42) came on one more time to try his luck at besting the Dodgers. Koufax gave up a solo run in the top of the 8th when Willie Mays singled home catcher Ray Katt. On most teams giving up 2 runs means victory for a pitcher, but not on this Dodger squad. Koufax needed to be almost perfect, like his running mate Drysdale was the previous day, in order to win.
9/12- Polo Grounds
GAME 3 - Dodgers 6, Giants 5 LA had a rare offensive explosion and still almost lost. Sal "The Barber" Maglie had a 2 run lead going into the 9th, but the wheels feel off his wagon as he and relievers Windy McCall and Marv Grissom also were charged with runs, when Wes Parker hit a 3 run shot off of Grissom (2-2, 1.96). Ron Perranoski (1-1, 1.42) recorded the win in relief and Jim Brewer, who recorded his 4th save of the year by getting the final 2 outs by educing Don "Mandrake" Mueller to hit into a game ending DP. The Giants squandered a 2 homer day by Alvin Dark, who wend 3 for 5 with 3 RI and 2 runs scored.
